SERMON NOTES ➔
Todd Nighswonger, Elder & Lead Pastor
“The Goodness of Confrontation Done Rightly”
Synopsis: Dan Lovejoy did a great job giving us a theology of work from 2 Thessalonians 3:6-12. This week, Todd laid out for us a theology of confrontation. His main point was that in order for us to be the people God intends us to be, conflict and confrontation are inevitable. For many, this task is very uncomfortable. However, confrontation is a good thing for God’s people when we do it like God has asked us
Community Group Discussion QUESTIONS:
How would you describe your attitude towards confrontation prior to studying 2 Thessalonians 3:13-16? How has confrontation done wrongly affected your view? Has or how has your attitude changed towards it?
Todd pointed out that good confrontation begins not with the person who needs to be confronted but with yourself. Why do we often skip this important aspect of confrontation? How does it change how we confront each other?
Good confrontation “begins with the end in mind”. Biblically, this means that good confrontation has restoration and maturity as its goal for both the one confronting and the one confronted. What are the consequences of not keeping this goal in mind? How does confrontation change with that goal in mind?
While some situations may require immediate confrontation, most times, patience is in order–patience to understand the situation and to discern whether it is a biblical principle or a pet peeve. How does impatience lead away from restoration and maturity?
