Todd Nighswonger | “That Day Will Not Come Unless…Pt. 2”
Synopsis:
Last week, we went through 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 twice to help us grab an idea of what Todd believed that Paul was telling the church in Thessalonica. Three main ideas jumped out: (1) King Jesus is returning, (2) King Jesus will be victorious, and (3) we are to passionately pursue and love biblical truth to avoid being deceived. So, while there are places where people may see this text differently, there are also key places that followers of Jesus must hold firmly and stand firmly.
This week, Spencer, Christian, and Todd helped us to understand how to think rightly through difficult texts of Scripture. Their heart was to show us how to hold rightly to those things that are most clear and hold graciously to things that aren’t. In the end, this should not lead to arrogance, which results in bickering, but to a posture of humility that leads to unity.
QUESTIONS:
One of the most difficult aspects of studying the Bible is realizing that while God tells us what is sufficient for lives of godliness, he often doesn’t tell us everything we would like to know. Read Deuteronomy 29:29 and discuss as a group why we must focus upon what he clearly reveals to us.
It has been said: “The fertile seedbed for unity is humility.” Spencer helped us understand 1 Timothy 1:3-7 in this light. Healthy teaching and wrestling with biblical truth should produce: “love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith” (v 5). As you study Scripture together, how does your group protect one another from wandering “away into vain discussion” (v 6; not just on issues like “last things”, but anything that is less clear), while keeping your focus on love and unity?
