Todd Nighswonger | “That Day Will Not Come Unless…”
Synopsis: Last week, Christian finished chapter 1 by helping the Thesslonians understand why their persecutions and afflictions (v 4) were a sign or “evidence” of God’s righteous judgment (v 5). These people were made worthy by Jesus Christ, and the evidence was in how they were living worthily of the Kingdom. They were the real deal. This week, Todd showed us why they were confused about Jesus’ return. Someone told them that Jesus had already come back. So, to alleviate their confusion, Paul reminded them and brought new biblical truth to light for them to ease their angst that they had missed Jesus’ second coming.
QUESTIONS:
Why is it important to understand what God has revealed about Jesus’ second coming? What are the dangers of either not caring about or overthinking his return? How could either perspective cause us to be deceived? What are some of the wrong outcomes in our lives if we embrace either perspective?
Todd taught us that the best thing we can do to prevent ourselves from becoming deceived about the return of Christ is to live faithful lives with other followers of Jesus Christ. How does this protect us from “apostasy” or drifting away from God? How does having people in our lives that don’t think exactly like we do about the second coming of Christ protect us?
