Testimony: José Luis Amézquita
As you may know, on April 2nd, we presented José Luis (along with Bob Kreycik) to the church body as someone we believe is qualified to serve as an elder/overseer. We asked you to join us in praying for José Luis during the month of April, and that you would give us feedback regarding José’s readiness to serve as an elder at Cornerstone, based upon the qualifications and responsibilities listed in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9 and 1 Peter 5:1-4.

José Luis’ Testimony (English):
I was born in Guatemala, Central America, then moved to the United States, where I met my wife Luz at the church, where we served the youth group. A couple of years later, we got married and have been married for more than thirty years. God has blessed us with two (now adult) children, our son Jose Luis Jr. and our daughter Angelica. They are both married and raising their own families. We have been fortunate to add three grandchildren to our family: Layna (10), Gabriel (8), and Anaya (3).
By the grace of God, I grew up in a Christian family. My parents were already Christian when I was born. My maternal grandfather was a pastor for thirty-eight years, and I grew up observing my grandfather as he preached and displayed the gospel for the whole family. My grandfather modeled grace and integrity to our family until his final days. By the goodness of God, many of my family members were believers. As a child, I attended Sunday school with my family under the leadership of my grandfather.
When I was about twelve years old, I was convicted by the Holy Spirit to repent and trust Jesus for the forgiveness of my sins. I received Jesus Christ in my heart as my Lord and Savior (Ephesians 2: 1-5), and then I was baptized, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). By God's grace and mercy, I have been a believer ever since, and have been serving our Lord Jesus in the church in many areas of ministry, with ups and downs and difficult times I have remained sustained by His grace.
In 1992 I was called to pastoral ministry, and we have been serving ever since. In 1994 I completed my Biblical studies and continued my education. In the same year, my wife and I made our first missionary trip to Oaxaca, Mexico preaching the gospel, doing the work of evangelism, discipleship, church planting, leadership development, marriage conferences, and pastor's conferences, and this ministry remains until the present time. As we continued our missionary trips and conferences, we saw the need to establish and register a 501(C)(3) organization called Equipping the Church Int'l, which is still active.
In 1998, a few years after I started the ministry, God put on my heart to establish a more intentional and formalized Mercy Ministry to help the poor in our local communities and the church. As I started to look for resources, I got connected with CHF by a fellow pastor, and we became a Mercy Network recipient church. I have been involved with CHF since then and have served in different positions since 1998. Before being a staff member, I was the Pastor of a Mercy Network recipient church.
In 1999 I served as a member of the CHF Pastor's Advisory Council that lent support to the Ministry Development Department in working with the local churches.
In 2000 I was hired by CHF to give leadership to the SoCal Mercy Network of 60 churches, including 10 in Baja California, Mexico. A few years later, I became the first Director for Latin America, and I helped to develop relationships and partnerships, with many of those relationships still working with CHF.
As an Int'l Director, part of my responsibility was to participate in the development of protocols, processes, applications, forms, program development, implementation, and mission and vision strategy for the Ministry Development Department. I was able to provide support and lead the establishment and development of Mercy Networks in the US and Latin America.
In 2006 we planned a donor trip to Lima, Peru. This was one of my yearly trips to the region, and I was leading a group of donors; one of the people in that group was Pastor Francis Chan, and that's how I met him. We sat next to each other on the plane for eight and a half hours on our flight to Lima, Peru. During those hours, we had the opportunity to talk about CHF, life, and ministry, and we spent about four days together on that trip as he communicated that he had been praying to establish a Spanish ministry at Cornerstone and asked if I was interested. After a few conversations, I expressed my interest but told him I needed to go to the Lord in prayer, talk to my wife, and that I also needed to have a formal conversation with CHF'S leadership.
In February of 2007, after multiple conversations with CHF's and Cornerstone's leadership, we all agreed for me to be released from CHF to come and work for Cornerstone. During the transition period, I started to work part-time for Cornerstone and part-time for CHF. Later I became a full-time employee with Cornerstone after I trained my replacement at CHF.
In 2016 after praying for a couple of years, my wife and I decided that we wanted to move to another state where life was more affordable to live. We wanted to plant a church and retire there, so I communicated with Todd the plans and asked him to help me to pray for God's guidance and wisdom. It was a couple of months later that I received a call from CHF that they were about to open a Distribution Center in Dallas, Texas, and they asked if I was interested in helping them to establish and develop the Mercy Network in Dallas, Texas. We saw that it was the opportunity we had been praying for.
In April 2016, we moved to Dallas to start the distribution center and build the Mercy Network there. We did not expect how the weather was going to impact my wife's health; she began to experience serious respiratory issues and allergic reactions. In August 2018, after having multiple conversations with CHF's leadership, we agreed to come back to California because of my wife's physical condition. We've been back in California since then.
After working for a few months as the Ministry Development Director for the west, CHF presented me the opportunity to apply for the Ministry Development Executive Position, and by God's grace, I have been serving for the last three years as the Executive Director of Ministry Development, with thirty-two Mercy Networks in thirty countries around the world and 200+ churches in the United States in my care, which makes me responsible for more than 900 churches around the world. On top of this, I serve as the lead pastor in the Spanish Congregation at Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, CA.
In the last twenty-four years, I have only worked with two ministries: Children's Hunger Fund and Cornerstone Church Simi Valley, and I have been blessed by and am very thankful for the leadership of both ministries and how God has used them to shape every aspect of my life.
To God be the glory in everything I have been able to accomplish in life and ministry. It is only because of His grace and mercy.

Nací en Guatemala, Centroamérica, luego me mudé a los Estados Unidos, donde conocí a mi esposa Luz en la iglesia, donde servíamos al grupo de jóvenes. Un par de años después, nos casamos y hemos estado casados por más de treinta años. Dios nos ha bendecido con dos hijos (ahora adultos), nuestro hijo José Luis Jr. y nuestra hija Angélica. Ambos están casados y tienen sus propias familias. Hemos tenido la suerte de agregar tres nietos a nuestra familia: Layna (10), Gabriel (8) y Anaya (3).
Por la gracia de Dios, crecí en una familia cristiana. Mis padres ya eran cristianos cuando nací. Mi abuelo materno fue pastor durante treinta y ocho años, y crecí observando a mi abuelo mientras predicaba y mostraba el evangelio a toda la familia. Él fue el modelo de gracia e integridad para nuestra familia hasta sus últimos días. Por la bondad de Dios, muchos de los miembros de mi familia eran creyentes. De niño, asistía a la escuela dominical con mi familia bajo la dirección de mi abuelo.
Cuando tenía unos doce años, el Espíritu Santo me dio convicción y me llevo al arrepentimiento y a confiar en Jesús para el perdón de mis pecados. Recibí a Jesucristo en mi corazón como mi Señor y Salvador (Efesios 2: 1-5), y luego fui bautizado, en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo (Mateo 28:19). Por la gracia y la misericordia de Dios, he sido creyente desde entonces y he estado sirviendo a nuestro Señor Jesús en la iglesia en muchas áreas del ministerio, con altibajos y momentos difíciles me he mantenido sostenido por Su gracia.
En 1992 fui llamado al ministerio pastoral y hemos estado sirviendo desde entonces. En 1994 terminé mis estudios bíblicos y continué mi educación. En el mismo año, mi esposa y yo hicimos nuestro primer viaje misionero a Oaxaca, México predicando el evangelio, haciendo el trabajo de evangelismo, discipulado, plantación de iglesias, desarrollo de liderazgo, conferencias matrimoniales y conferencias de pastores, y este ministerio permanece hasta el presente tiempo. A medida que continuamos con nuestros viajes misioneros y conferencias, vimos la necesidad de establecer y registrar una organización 501(C)(3) llamada Equipando la Iglesia Internacional, que todavía está activa.
En 1998, unos años después de que comencé el ministerio, Dios puso en mi corazón establecer un Ministerio de Misericordia (Mercy Network) más intencional y formalizado para ayudar a los necesitados en nuestras comunidades locales y en la iglesia. Cuando comencé a buscar recursos, un compañero pastor me conectó con Children’s Hunger Fund (CHF) y nos convertimos en una iglesia beneficiaria de Mercy Network. He estado involucrado con CHF desde entonces y he servido en diferentes posiciones desde 1998. Antes de ser miembro del personal, fui pastor de una iglesia receptora de Mercy Network.
En 1999 serví como miembro del Consejo Asesor de Pastores de CHF que brindó apoyo al Departamento de Desarrollo Ministerial en el trabajo con las iglesias locales.
En 2000 fui contratado por CHF para dar liderazgo a la Red SoCal Mercy de 60 iglesias, incluyendo 10 en Baja California, México. Unos años más tarde, me convertí en el primer Director para América Latina y ayudé a desarrollar relaciones y asociaciones, y muchas de esas relaciones aún funcionan con CHF.
Como Director Internacional, parte de mi responsabilidad era participar en el desarrollo de protocolos, procesos, aplicaciones, formularios, desarrollo de programas, implementación y estrategia de misión y visión para el Departamento de Desarrollo del Ministerio. Pude brindar apoyo y liderar el establecimiento y desarrollo de Mercy Networks en los EE. UU. y América Latina.
En 2006 planeamos un viaje de donantes a Lima, Perú. Este fue uno de mis viajes anuales a la región y estaba liderando un grupo de donantes; una de las personas en ese grupo era el pastor Francis Chan, y así fue como lo conocí. Nos sentamos uno al lado del otro en el avión durante ocho horas y media en nuestro vuelo a Lima, Perú. Durante esas horas, tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar sobre CHF, la vida y el ministerio, y pasamos unos cuatro días juntos en ese viaje cuando me comunicó que había estado orando para establecer un ministerio en español de Cornerstone y me preguntó si estaba interesado. Después de algunas conversaciones, expresé mi interés, pero le dije que necesitaba ir al Señor en oración, hablar con mi esposa y que también necesitaba tener una conversación formal con el liderazgo de CHF.
En febrero de 2007, después de múltiples conversaciones con los líderes de CHF y Cornerstone, todos acordamos que me liberaran de CHF para venir a trabajar en Cornerstone. Durante el período de transición, comencé a trabajar medio tiempo para Cornerstone y medio tiempo para CHF. Más tarde me convertí en un empleado de tiempo completo de Cornerstone después de capacitar a mi reemplazo en CHF.
En 2016, después de orar durante un par de años, mi esposa y yo decidimos que queríamos mudarnos a otro estado donde la vida fuera más practicable. Queríamos plantar una iglesia y retirarnos allí, así que le comuniqué los planes a Todd y le pedí que me ayudara a orar por la guía y la sabiduría de Dios. Fue un par de meses después cuando recibí una llamada de CHF que estaba a punto de abrir un Centro de Distribución en Dallas, Texas, y me preguntaron si estaba interesado en ayudarlos a establecer y desarrollar la Red de la Misericordia, (Mercy Network) en Dallas, Texas. Vimos que era la oportunidad por la que habíamos estado orando.
En abril de 2016, nos mudamos a Dallas para iniciar el centro de distribución y construir allí el Mercy Network. No esperábamos cómo iba a impactar el clima en la salud de mi esposa; ella comenzó a experimentar problemas respiratorios y reacciones alérgicas serias. En agosto de 2018, después de varias conversaciones con el liderazgo de CHF, acordamos regresar a California debido a la condición física de mi esposa. Hemos estado en California desde entonces.
Después de trabajar durante unos meses como Director de Desarrollo Ministerial para el oeste, CHF me presentó la oportunidad de postularme para el puesto ejecutivo de Desarrollo Ministerial y, por la gracia de Dios, he estado sirviendo durante los últimos tres años como Director Ejecutivo de Desarrollo Ministerial, con treinta y dos Redes de Misericordia en treinta países alrededor del mundo y más de 200 iglesias en los Estados Unidos a mi cargo, lo que me hace responsable de más de 900 iglesias alrededor del mundo. Además de esto, sirvo como pastor principal en la Congregación Hispana en la Iglesia Cornerstone en Simi Valley, CA.
En los últimos veinticuatro años, solo he trabajado con dos ministerios: Children's Hunger Fund y Cornerstone Church Simi Valley, y he sido bendecido y estoy muy agradecido por el liderazgo de ambos ministerios y cómo Dios los ha usado para dar forma a cada aspecto de mi vida.
A Dios sea la gloria en todo lo que he podido realizar en mi vida y ministerio. Es sólo por Su gracia y misericordia.
