Introduction
Series: The Great Commission: Apprenticing With Jesus
Synopsis: This Sunday, Christian introduced our new sermon series through the Gospel of Matthew. He highlighted how the three titles that Matthew gives to Jesus in 1:1 (Christ, Son of David, & Son of Abraham) are loaded with significance from the Old Testament. In this way, Matthew is inviting us and training us to view Jesus in light of the Old Testament Story and to view the Old Testament in light of Jesus. Christian also encouraged us to regularly read through Matthew during this series. As we read, we should pay attention to how people responded to Jesus, or how Jesus called people to respond, and then ask ourselves the same question: How will I respond to what I have heard?
Additionally, the Bible Project has a video that gives an overview of the first 13 chapters of Matthew, which is the section we will be studying this year. The video is a little over 8 minutes long, and it could be a helpful resource for your group to watch together (or you could watch it on your own).
Community Group Discussion QUESTIONS:
At Cornerstone, we define a disciple as “a follower of Jesus who is learning from Jesus, trusting Jesus, becoming like Jesus, and helping others do the same.” As we continue through the Gospel of Matthew, discuss these questions in your group and/or for personal reflection throughout the week:
What can I/we learn from Jesus in these verses?
How do these verses call and help me/us to trust Jesus?
What attributes about Jesus are evident in these passages, and how can I/we become more like him?
What are some practical ways I/we can help others to learn from, trust, and become like Jesus?
For weekly group discussion guides related to each sermon, please see our community guides below
