Todd Nighswonger, Elder & Lead Pastor
“The Greatest Ability: Availability”
Series: The Great Commission
Synopsis: The last message in the “Great Commission” series focuses on “availability.” In fact, Todd makes the argument that the greatest ability is availability. Jesus chose to make disciples of those who made themselves available. However, this availability wasn’t a one-time event, but a series of events that allowed them to learn how to walk with Jesus. And when God’s Spirit landed upon them in Acts, all of the time from them choosing to make themselves available connected and these “available” people turned the world upside down.
Community Group Discussion QUESTIONS:
Todd first discussed the idea that the original disciples, most of whom were Galilean, weren’t that “great” in the world’s eyes. Yet Jesus chose them to launch the church. Spend some time discussing this dynamic as a group. Make sure to apply that to yourselves.
Todd showed us how Jesus prepared his disciples. He didn’t expect the Great Commission initially. He simply told them to “come and you will see.” The process by which he prepared them took availability, but over time. As a group, discuss the importance of time in shaping a disciple. What are the dangers of moving someone along too quickly? Too slowly?
Jesus’ promise to be with his people has been explained throughout this series as happening through the Holy Spirit. Apart from God’s Spirit, God’s people cannot accomplish anything. However, when available people who have been prepared by Jesus encounter the Holy Spirit, ordinary people accomplish extraordinary things. Take time as a group to discuss the absolutely essential role of God’s Spirit in the Great Commission. Especially, connect your discussion to availability.
