SERMON NOTES ➔
Christian Burkhardt, Elder & Equipping Pastor
The Means: Teaching for Keeping
Series: The Great Commission
Synopsis: In this message, Christian focused on the third participle that Jesus used to describe how we are to “make disciples of all nations,” by “teaching them to observe [or keep] all that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:20a). Christian explored this idea of “teaching for keeping” from three angles: informational (observing what Jesus taught), experiential (putting them into practice), and multiplicative (passing on what we have learned to others). He emphasized that “teaching for keeping” isn’t just the task of a few people in official teaching roles, but an activity that all disciples are called to do, in various ways and to varying degrees, as we grow to maturity in Christ (Luke 6:40).
Community Group Discussion QUESTIONS:
Discuss how you are currently seeking to keep Jesus’ commands in the three ways that Christian described in his message–and how you can help each other continue to do so.
Informational: What is one thing that you’ve observed about Jesus (his words, actions or commands) this week?
Experiential: What is one thing that Jesus commanded or modeled that you’ve sought to put into practice this week?
Multiplicative: What is one thing that Jesus commanded or modeled that you’ve not only sought to practice but also to pass on to someone else? (Hint: That’s kinda what you’re doing right now, too!)
