Today ➔
Good morning, Cornerstone family!
Whether you’re new or you’ve been a part of Cornerstone for a while, welcome! We are a multi-ethnic, multi-generational community of disciples, who are seeking to learn from Jesus, trust Jesus, become like Jesus, and help others do the same.
Our mission is to give every individual an accurate picture of God by helping those who believe become fully devoted followers of Christ.
If you’re longing to know who Jesus is, what he has done, and is doing in our lives, we would love to connect with you. And if you need a Bible, please feel free to ask any of our ushers or head over to the information table in the main lobby.
You can also fill out our online connect card below and we’ll do our best to get in touch with you as soon as possible!
SERMON NOTES & Questions ➔
Todd Nighswonger | Elder & Lead Pastor
Synopsis: Todd reminded us of the importance of the habit of regularly gathering together with God’s people. It is one of the crucial ways in which God opens the sails of our lives and fills them with his Spirit. One of the ways in which he does this is through rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks together (1 Thess 5:16-18). The other way, which we looked at this weekend, is through hearing his voice, or prophecy. God wants us to be built up (5:11) and become the people God intends us to be. To be so, we must be in the habit of hearing God’s voice.
QUESTIONS:
Todd walked through a history of prophecy from the Old and New Testaments. We learned that prophecy was given to God’s people through messengers to correct, protect, direct, remind, and comfort so that they might be the people God intended them to be. Take some time as a group to discuss the dangers of: (1) not heeding God’s message or (2) heeding a message not from God. Focus on the history of God’s people and/or Todd’s message in your discussion.
Some in your group may be cessationists. You believe that God has ceased to give prophecy to his church because the Bible is complete. For you, God’s Word is his completed prophecy to us. Others may be continuationists, or you believe that God continues to give prophecy to his church. Or you may be somewhere in the middle. The big idea Todd gave us was that we must know God’s Word. Are you regularly reading, listening to, and discussing Scripture? Why or why not? Discuss as a group how you can help one another be more faithful to read the Bible and seek to obey it (Jam 1:22-25).
What are some questions you have regarding prophecy for the elders? If you have any, feel free to ask any of our elders either in-person or by email. We want to answer them as best we can for you.
