sermon notes & questions:
“Faithfulness: Boldness Redefined, Pt 2” | Todd Nighswonger, Elder & Lead Pastor
Synopsis: Last week, we learned that boldness for Paul looked differently than it does for us. He used images of a mother and father to describe the type of boldness he had when he ministered to the Thessalonians. Using that idea, Paul then reminded the new followers of Jesus that their suffering, vulnerability, and weakness was actually the mark of God’s people. They may have felt defeated and exposed, but, in fact, they were in a phenomenal position to see the power of God manifested. And this hope would allow them to be bold too.
Questions:
Why do we attempt to operate from positions of power, advantage, and authority? Think about this question in the context of marriage, parenting, business/work, politics, etc. We try to “win” the argument, bully those weaker, climb over others on the corporate ladder, cozy up to the politically powerful, etc. Why does God continue to place his people in positions of weakness/humility to accomplish his purpose and plan?
As a group, think back through some of the saints mentioned in the Bible: Noah, Abraham, Moses, Gideon, David, the prophets, and John the Baptist. How did God manifest his power and glory through their weakness? How about Jesus Christ? How about the early church?
Why is it encouraging to know that injustice and evil will be judged by God? What is the danger of wrongly using human means and power to overcome evil (BTW...there is a way to do it rightly so that we overcome evil with good)? How does hope in Jesus as the great Judge give us boldness to step into injustice and evil for others, even at great cost?
