“Faith, Love, and Hope in Action, Pt 1” | Todd Nighswonger, Elder & Lead Pastor
Synopsis: For the last few Sunday’s, we’ve been learning about Paul’s pastoral heart regarding the return of King Jesus. We’ve also learned about hope, boldness, holiness, and love. In these final verses, Paul left the people a series of commands based upon these truths, specifically regarding their relationships with the various leaders and one another, their heart of joy and thanksgiving in prayer, and the key things to avoid.
QUESTIONS (20 Minutes)
Why do you suppose it was so important to Paul for the Thessalonians to understand how they are to function together? Why was their relationship with leaders key to their shared life? How does this reality apply to Cornerstone? How are you doing as a group?
In 4:3, Paul clarified that sanctification is God’s will. In 5:16-18, God’s will is that we rejoice, pray, and are thankful. Why do we tend to see holiness as more important to God’s will than those? Why are the three of those realities so important? How can your group do a better job of living God’s will regarding them?
A biblical scholar named Gordon Fee translated verses 19-22 like this: “Do not put out the Spirit’s fire. Do not treat prophecies with contempt, but test them all; hold fast to what is good, reject whatever is harmful.” Todd gave us different ways of approaching Paul’s idea here but emphasized the importance of Scripture. As a group, discuss the importance of God’s Word regarding Paul’s final commands.
