sermon notes & questions:

“Faith, Hope, and Love: Celebrating God's Power” | Todd Nighswonger, Lead Pastor & Elder

Synopsis: Last week, we learned that Paul intended to help the Thessalonians stand firm in their difficulty by reminding them of their confident expectation in God’s proven faithfulness and by fueling their desire for the good God has promised in the future for those in Christ. This week, we learned that Paul intended to help the Thessalonians by reminding them what was true despite their perception of such loss. He expanded on what he meant by faith, love, and hope, to give them confidence that God was making, is making, and will make all things right.

Questions:

  1. The retelling of the Thessalonian’s true story began in the heart and mind of God (v.4). Paul reminded his audience that we’re “chosen” and “loved by God.”

    • Why does Paul begin with God and not them in telling their story?

    • How does this help them and us to stand firm in difficulty?

  2. Paul used a lot of family language throughout 1 Thessalonians. How does reminding them of their new family help them and us in battling loss?

  3. What are the implications of this teaching for your life? Our church? The world around us?
